Case Study:

What inspired you to sign up to be a volunteer?

I’ve always been passionate about connecting with the community and giving back to the society I’m a part of. Volunteering felt like the perfect way to meet new people, learn valuable skills, and make a positive difference right here in Coventry.

Why did you apply to be a City Host? Was it suggested to you and by who?

I was drawn to the role of a City Host because it offered a unique opportunity to represent Coventry and showcase the vibrant, diverse community that makes this city so special. When I came across the opportunity of volunteering for Welcome Hosts & City Greeters, it immediately resonated with me. It felt like a perfect fit for my passion for creating welcoming environments, supporting others, and connecting with people from all walks of life. I saw it not just as a chance to give back, but also as a way to grow personally, gain deeper insights into the city, and contribute to the sense of pride and belonging that Coventry embodies.

What were your early experiences, and why did you continue?

My early experiences as a City Host were incredibly rewarding and left a lasting impression on me. Every day brought the chance to meet people, each with their own stories and perspectives. It was inspiring to see how much they appreciated the effort we put into creating a welcoming and friendly environment. Whether it was answering their questions, offering directions, or simply sharing a warm smile, their gratitude was a powerful reminder of why I took on the role.

Hearing their positive feedback and feeling a genuine sense of accomplishment after every interaction motivated me to keep going. It wasn’t just about helping others; it also gave me a deeper appreciation for the community I’m part of and the impact small acts of kindness can have on someone’s day.

What have you gained from your experience volunteering so far? How have you personally benefitted?

Volunteering has been an incredible learning experience for me, especially when it comes to communication and building connections with others. I’ve developed invaluable interpersonal skills, like being an active listener, adapting my approach to different people, and understanding how to engage meaningfully with individuals from all walks of life.

It’s also given me a much greater sense of cultural awareness. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds has broadened my perspective and taught me how important it is to approach every interaction with empathy, curiosity, and respect.

On a personal level, volunteering has been so much more than just a role, it’s given me a real sense of purpose. Being able to contribute to something bigger than myself and playing a part in strengthening the community has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s helped me feel more connected to Coventry and reminded me of the positive impact we can make when we come together.

What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer?

I’d absolutely say go for it! Volunteering is one of the most fulfilling things you can do. It’s a chance to give back to your community while also growing as a person. You’ll meet incredible people, form connections you might not have otherwise, and gain valuable skills that can benefit you in so many areas of life.

What’s even better is that you often end up gaining just as much as you give, sometimes even more. Whether it’s the sense of purpose, the joy of helping someone, or simply learning something new about yourself or others, it’s an experience that truly stays with you. If you’re considering it, take the leap, you won’t regret it!.

What has been your most memorable or favourite moment of volunteering so far? What opportunities have you enjoyed?

One of my favourite moments as a City Host was being part of the Fostering event. It was such a meaningful experience that really highlighted the difference we make in people’s lives and their experiences in Coventry. Seeing the genuine interest and engagement from attendees, knowing that our efforts were contributing to such an important cause, was incredibly fulfilling.

It reminded me that our role as City Hosts goes beyond just providing information or a friendly face, it’s about creating connections, inspiring trust, and being a small but important part of someone’s journey. That day really reaffirmed why I’m so passionate about what I do and the impact we can have as a team. Moments like that make it all so worthwhile.

What do you enjoy the most about being a City Host?

I enjoy the most about being a City Host is the opportunity to connect with both visitors and residents. I genuinely love the interactions, every conversation is different and often filled with curiosity, stories, or just a shared appreciation for Coventry. It’s incredibly satisfying to help someone find their way around the city, recommend a great spot to visit, or share a bit of Coventry’s rich culture and history.
